In most states, solar panels are automatically covered as part of your dwelling (Coverage A) because they're permanently attached to your home. You don't need a separate solar insurance policy β but you do need to verify your dwelling limit includes your system's full value and that the right perils are covered for your state.
Replacement Cost Value (RCV) pays the full cost to replace damaged panels at today's prices. Actual Cash Value (ACV) depreciates your panels first β paying 30β60% less on a 7-year-old system. Always insist on RCV. The premium difference is typically $40β$80/year, but the claim difference can be $12,000β$25,000.
Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ Battery, and other battery systems are typically covered under dwelling coverage β but not automatically with every insurer. Allstate includes them by default; State Farm requires a written endorsement. Always confirm in writing. A $14,500 Powerwall overlooked in a wildfire claim is a costly mistake.
